I buy a lot of this, and (as an EA organizer) I usually think marginal persuasion is the best way to go for community building.
I think the implicit (bad but common) critique here would be something like: even if something is on the margin good, people (imo wrongly) think that there are no philosophically principled ways of distinguishing the margin and the extreme (but there are - pluralism, moral uncertainty, moral curve fitting) - therefore, they just see the on the margin take as leading to the extremes.
