I agree AI is likely to be a big deal, and we aren't prepared at all. Most people have no idea what's coming.

The left is mostly enamored with Gary Marcus-style "It's all hype" AI skepticism, their worries are mostly about AI being racist or unreliable or stealing artists' work.

Meanwhile, the right is vaguely pro-AI, maybe a little worried about ChatGPT being woke.

I think the best inroads to pursue right now is among the left-- there are certainly already some left-wing voices speaking out about this stuff-- see Ezra Klein for liberals and Garrison Lovely for socialists. I am worried about the issue becoming polarized on the basis of politics, though.

My read on the current models (I have plus tier ChatGPT) is that it’ll do anything a competent undergrad can. That’s not Amodei’s “18 months to paradise” but a competent 20 year old research assistant is nothing to sneeze at.
